Your pulse rate drops, blood pressure slackens, breathing
lightens and your cerebral cortex lights up. What's happening? Your are
listening to music. Early man heard sounds and reacted in order to survive but over time our brains have evolved to interpret more complex sounds such as the melody, rhythm and timbre that make up music whether it be orchestral or jazz. Sound now makes up most of our waking hours and we have forgotten how to listen. We wake to the sound of the radio, music is on tap to distract us as we drive to work, we shop to music and fill our ears with TV, CDs and movies during our free time. Music encourages chickens to lay eggs and workers to produce more yet when do we truly listen? The harsh clarion call that introduces the news acknowledges our lack of attention. Music is used in healing, hypnosis and pain reduction. A tune can bring back powerful memories whether sad or sweet so why not use this amazing brain that we have to listen mindfully? It does not have to be somewhere quiet for you to be aware and listen, just be still without and within and focus on the sounds around you. It is amazing what new sounds you will find. Don't let these sounds intrude on your stillness, simply be aware of them and mentally scan the space around you for what else is going on. Soundscapes have changed over the years. My childhood was spent in the west country of England and I recall church bells and the whistle of a steam train. My soundscape now is a distant hum from the freeway, warbling magpies, occasional light planes and the whirr of the computer fan. But I have added something these last few years, the sound of singing bowls. I make it part of "my time", switching off, being somewhere else. I put problems aside as I allow the seductive sounds to hold my attention. I have two special bowls that I play and by habit, I know I will be relaxed. Last time I sat quietly, it felt calming and peaceful; next time it will be the same. It has become a signal to my brain to focus, relax, let go. I sit comfortably, strike the bowl and just follow the sound. By holding the bowl, I also feel the vibration so get an extra dose of "feel good" through the palm of my hand. The sound is sweet and harmonic and holds my attention so that I feel I don't want to acknowledge it has stopped. That space of no sound before I hear the other soundscape is bliss. |

New stock of singing bowls and tingshaws finally arrived
from Nepal a few weeks ago. Koppre singing bowls are often referred to
as antique meaning they are not new but probably 30 plus years old. The
bowls were traditional used as food bowls and have been cleaned with
sand over the years producing a shiny surface. They are becoming very
hard to find. Jam singing bowls are new handbeaten bowls and therefore are thicker/heavier with perhaps a stronger vibration. Etched bowls can be either Koppre or Jam. Sounds from handbeaten bowls are very harmonic and my musical digitiser has a hard time determining what tone to display, often moving from an A to a B and maybe G.
Gulpa bowls, made from cast metal with beautiful markings inside and
out, have a more bell-like tone. I have several in stock with tones A B C E F and G and as an encouragement to experience listening, these Gulpa bowls are available at $58 which includes a playing stick, singing bowl notes and postage. This is $10 cheaper than those on the web page. To purchase please send an email with your requirements and mailing details. Bye for now, walk in peace and beauty, Marilynne Sherpa |
